White Lie Early Season Chardonnay, California
[culturedwino.com: A blog about wine and other yummy things] White Lie Early Season Chardonnay, California You may have seen the dustup on the blog a few months ago regarding White Lie Early Season Chardonnay, so when I received an instant message from Beringer Blass PR folks offering me a chance to speak to Tracey Mason, Beringer Blass Director of Global Innovation, I said “Uh, okay.” White Lie bills itself as a lighter-tasting, lower calorie, lower alcohol chardonnay designed for women by women. The grapes were grown and picked in Santa Barbara, California where, Mason says, the cooler temperatures produce grapes that can be picked earlier in the season than if they had been grown in Napa or Sonoma.

Lagniappes
[amuse-bouche] Slate’s Mike Steinberger takes on that most favorite of tilting horses, the 1855 Bordeaux classification. I may blog more on this later, not because it’s such a brilliant concept but because it’s worth adding yet another voice to the fray that the 1855 rankings are completely useless and need to be given a proper burial.

This weeks column
[amuse-bouche] The quick premise of this week’s column, because the rest is set up in the piece (and the piece is largely devoted to tasting notes), was to find wines that go well with grilled stuff that aren’t in the usual Cab-merlot realm. After all, the Bordelaise adore open flames, so it’s no shock that Bordeaux varietals match meat so well. Plus, if I can convert one Cab drinker over to barbera, then it’s all worthwhile.

The downside of the recent wine rule change
[Quotulatiousness] I was informed by a person very close to the deliberations on the meaning for the Supreme Court Ruling in Michigan that one interpretation of the decision could be that if no shipping is allowed into the state or within the state by wineries, it would follow that wineries can not sell AT ALL direct to the public. This would be an extreme interpretation, but not out of the realm of possibility. Of course it would be the near total demise of small wineries in states like Michigan.

Nexus of Music and Wine Making.
[Spittoon - wine news and tasting notes.] Music adds a dimension to the wine making process that doesnt make it to the back label description. From the gentle cadence of Gregorian chant at Owen Roe to the bold strains of the Jimi Hendrix Experience heard while stirring a cauldron of biodynamic spray at Brick House, music is an inspirational partner in the winemaking process.

2002 Buckeleys Shiraz
[FargleSnargle.com] Very pleasant. And then a lot of what you like in an Australian Shiraz. A touch of pepper, a bit of red fruit, somewhere between raspberry and plum. This goes well with a nice roast beef or even perhaps a little dark chocolate.

This weeks column
[amuse-bouche] I tend to chalk it up to climate more than anything; much of California is far warmer than the northern Rhône, and you can immediately see in the ABV levels just how much sugar is being pulled out of those grapes. That theyre big and extracted is really an issue of style - though one Im not exactly rooting for - but the occasional residual sweetness is cloying. More often than not, I miss those heady, meaty notes that telegraph Cornas or St. Joseph.

Supreme Court Bans Interstate Wine Shipping
[CrushingGrape] The Supreme Court in an unprecedented move, not only ruled to uphold a state’s right to outlaw shipping of wines to wine club members whose wine clubs are located in another state. The Court took it upon itself to further rule that states are required to actively prevent consumers from bringing alcohol they purchased in other states into their home state. Legal scholars were shocked by the Court’s ruling on the law which was intended to stop retailers from selling imported alcohol without paying import tarrifs.

A bottle of Kent anyone?

Theme announced for WBW #9
[Winecast] Sam over at the Becks & Posh blog has chosen the theme for Wine Blogging Wednesday #9 and its rose (or pink) wines. Should be fun to track down some of the great French rose of Anjou and Sancerre and taste them against some of California’s best white Pinot’s (a.k.a Vin Gris). Dont worry, no “white” Zinfandel this time

Critique of Pure Riesling: Wine snobbery in an age of globalization
[Depraved Librarian] These men ushered an identity crisis into the world of wine, an Americanization and eventual globalization that has yet to abate. That crisis and its fallout are explored at length in Mondovino, a documentary that debuted last year at Cannes and opened last week in New York City. Jonathan Nossiter's film, which spans Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Tuscany, and Monkton, Maryland, among other places, is a sympathetic portrayal of European winemakers struggling to hold their own amongst the avatars of globalization.tags: Mondovino, wine
