Support your local wine merchant!

When is an Ontario wine not an Ontario wine?

[Quotulatiousness] Currently, both VQA and blended wines sit in the "Ontario" aisle, though in separate sections.Though Beal noted that blended wines say "Cellared in Canada" on the label so as not to completely hide foreign content, he said, "It sometimes can be a little bit confusing. A lot of people don't look at the label until they get their wine home."

Taste of Wine Country on Cape Cod

[Cork Tease] Winemakers Kathy Gregrow and Judy Wimer founded the winery in 1992 after seeing potential in the warm coastal air and well-drained, sandy soil, which gives Cape Cod an ideal microclimate not unlike the North Fork of Long Island. Truro Vineyards produces more than 6,000 cases per year of eight different wines, which are sold at the winery and also distributed to over 100 restaurants and wine stores on Cape Cod and throughout Massachusetts.

This week’s column

[amuse-bouche] Albert Mann 2000 Grand H pinot noir (4.2, Weygandt-Metzler, price n/a): Deep, damp earthy notes, candied sour cherry, wet leaves and cinnamon, with a brooding, complex quality that comes up and whacks you in the nose. It achieves that tricky balance of light and full, with a bit of dry mineral in the core and a perfectly tapered, slightly zingy finish.

Careful with the Sauvignon Blanc, though, while I can see any European variety working, I would shy away from the very intense fruitiness of a Chilean or Aussi/NZ one, which would be overpowering and not rustic enough for a Schnitzel...
