The Asia Effect
[Vinography: a wine blog] A recent trade partnership between China and Chile, and talks of Chinese investment in the Chilean wine industry indicate China's interest in participating in the global wine market, not to mention hint at increasing demand. Experts predict healthy 20% annual growth rates in consumption as largest consumers of Beaujolais Nouveau in the world, passing even the United States and Britain in their imports of the fresh purple stuff.

Massachusetts Governor vetoes bill to allow internet wine sales
[The Wine Online] Mitt Romney has vetoed a bill that would have allowed residents to buy wine from out-of-state wineries over the Internet, saying certain provisions in the proposed law are anti-consumer. The bill, which would have allowed small wineries to sell to consumers online, was passed in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that struck down protectionist laws in other states.

2,000 years of binge drinking.
[Spittoon - wine drink and food.] Give it a year and the frenzy of the relaxation on the drinking laws will be long forgotton. Alcohol has long been a feature of the UK as this article in the Independent explains - from the Nordic ales, the 30 year gin epidemic through to the restrictions of World War I.

Helping You Remember Where You Put That Bottle
[Vinography: a wine blog] But since I haven't mentioned them in a while, I thought I'd use today's good news to highlight the fact that I've catalogued several dozen health benefits of wine, and today, there's one more that's especially promising, especially to those of us who worry that one day we might have Alzheimer's bad enough to (gasp!) forget where we put our favorite wines.

”05's Lower-Alcohol Due to Cool weather?
[Avenue Vine] Bob Steinhauer, viticulturist at Foster's Wine Estates Americas, called the 2005 growing season "a dogfight from start to finish." The growing season started with a wet winter, especially on the North Coast, followed by a long, cool growing season that left many grape growers fighting mildew and botrytis. Cool weather in September and October, however, provided ideal conditions for grape growers.

Why A Wine Club Just for Women? Men!
[Fermentation: The Daily Wine Blog] I worked with one woman winemaker/winery owner who was convince that women make better winemakers because they are emotionally better equipped to nurture. While that always sounded right to me in a metaphysical kind of way, I've always had that distinctively male quality that demands you "show me."

WBW14: The Pinot Noir was white!
[Purple Liquid: a wine and food diary] Jens suggested some other wine regions like Chile, Spain, Australia and New York, as “a great opportunity to explore an old varietal in some new locations and then compare them to the usual suspects.” Being in an Italian mood these days (and if Spain is in the list, why not Italy?), It seemed to me that Pinot Nero, a type of wine that is still largely undervalued and unknown, would fit the definition perfectly.

Wine Blogging Wednesday 16: Judge a Bottle By Its Cover
[An Obsession with Food] We've stood in front of a wall of wine at the store and, unable to utter the incantation of producer and vintage and Parker/Laube pronouncements that will summon a magical bottle, we have chosen one solely for its pretty label. Wineries know this.

State Tasters Fooled By Imports-Germany
[Avenue Vine] A German winemaker has fooled official state tasters into thinking cheap imported Pinot Gris was quality German wine, in a bid to expose flaws in the country's wine regulation system. Edgar Schätzler, a winegrower in Guntersblum in the state of Hesse filled his bottles with Hungarian Pinot Gris, which experts labeled 'quality German wine' in official blind tastings, the German news magazine Der Spiegel reported this week.

Wine Blogging Wednesday #15 - Small Production Wines.
[Spittoon - wine drink and food.] In 1974, CVNE established Contino, a separate estate with its own vineyards in Laserna to produce one of the first single vineyard, chateau bottled wines in Rioja. Contino makes only one wine, a reserva in good vintages and a crianza in lesser ones.

Wine Tasting Note: Tamerici Sauvignon, 2002, Salento, Italy.
[Spittoon - wine drink and food.] so a white - from a mix of Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia - peaked my fancy immediately. The area has a reputation for rustic (rough and ready), cheap wines usually shipped off for bottling elsewhere but there is a widespread regeneration occurring across the region utilising traditional varieties such as Primitivo, Uva di Troia and Malvasia Nera.
