Baths of the Rich & Famous

http://basicjuice.blogs.com/basicjuice [Basic Juice - the wine blog for my generation] At one time, the Thermenregion was the summer frolic spot for those with cash in Vienna's societé. This area, once home to soggy rich folks, is also the birthplace of sparkling wine in Austria, not to mention the home to a mysterious red grape variety.

Wild Bunch California Red Wine 2003

[Wines] Price: $10 Maker: Wild Bunch Wines, Montevina Winery, Plymouth, Amador County, California Variety: Zinfandel, Syrah, Barbera Packaging: 750 ml bottle, screw cap Our Rating: 8.5 out of 10 The non-varietal name of Wild Bunch California Red Wine 2003 and its screw cap may be slightly off-putting, but what comes out of the bottle will put your fears to rest. This blend favors the fruitiness of its Zinfandel component, with a nod to the spice one expects from Syrah.

Palatine Hills - Sauvignon Blanc 2003

[Grape Juice] Overall winner (I would say) of our favourite vineyard award during our last Niagara trip, Palatine Hills excelled both at red wines, and at whites, with a strong trio that I had the pleasure of trying. While I will skip over what an experienced wine taster can expect to learn from the nose, i have pointed out things a novice (like myself) can look (smell?) for.

Last week in Italy.

http://www.spittoonextra.biz [SpittoonExtra: Food, Photographs, EBBP and Foodography.] This time last week I was sitting on an Italian balcony - an under-sized bathrobe stretched around my midriff, cuffs tight halfway down my arms with a bottle of Prosecco by my side. To my right a half moon, indistinct from a slight haze, hung over the village of Rolle.
