Spirit of Wine: *** $$ Magito Panorama Zinfandel, 2005, CA ...

[Untitled] On the palate, the Magito is somewhat more balanced and subdued than I anticipated, providing a spicy, mid-palate expression of blackberry and dark oak, firmed by mouth coating sleek tannins. Again, the alcohol is just a touch hot for the flavor combination.

[Wells on Wine] This Russian River Ridge Zinfandel has a lush nose of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, smoke, anise and wood with some black pepper spice... the flavors are lush and fruit forward but elegant and relatively restrained...

[Pendock Uncorked at The Times] Yesterday’s Sunday Times announced “the devil has been let loose at Rhema” with diabolic evidence presented of the pastor chomping “600g T-bone steaks, washed down with R365 bottles of Meerlust merlot.” Compare and contrast to Sodom & Gauteng (then economic [sic] MEC, now premier) Paul Mashatile whose Auberge Michel restaurant post-budget speech dinner famously cost taxpayers R96 000 two years ago.

Tasting Note: 1996 Carneros Pinot Noir, Saintsbury « The Wine Case

[The Wine Case] I haven’t bought any Saintsbury pinots, in recent years, but seeing that the alcohol levels are still reasonable (13.5% on the 2006 Carneros pinot noir) and that the use of wood is careful and moderate (9 months in French oak, 30% new, again for the 2006), I’d be enclined to give this wine another go. And to keep it for several years, no doubt.

[StatesmanJournal.com - Arts, Culture & Entertainment] This light, Burgundian-style pinot noir is surprisingly robust with strawberry fruit, licorice and smoky flavors on the palate. Elegant enough to be served by itself, it also would be a wonderful accompaniment to salmon and meat stews.

[Sour Grapes] In fact, Mullheim seems to be pretty close to Alsace in France so the weather and soil may be quite similar (part of “terroir”) which may explain the similarities with Alsatian Pinot Noir.

[The Wine Front] David Hook is one of the best producers in the Hunter Valley - and I like his prices too. To my tastes this isn’t one of his best efforts but it’s still got a lot of flavour.

[Spirit of Wine] In a comparable price-range, I would lean towards the Sutter Home White Zinfandel over the Franzia as a first choice. It shows a wider depth and range of flavours along with a more alluring aroma.
