[Gourmet Pigs] After going wine tasting in the Santa Ynez Valley, I finally sat down and watched Sideways, the movie that propelled central valley Pinot Noir to fame and unjustly gave a bad rap to Merlot. Do you like Bordeaux?

[Inside Movies] Famous Movie Locations: The 'Sideways' Tour (Santa Ynez Valley, CA ...: 'Sideways' also had a marked effect on the wine world: Miles' rant against merlot villified the popular red, and his glowing praise of the pinot noir, known for its complex, difficult-to-perfect flavor, resulted in a 45 percent jump in sales of the wine the year after the movie was released. Not only that, but Payne's film uncorked a whole new moviegoing set of oenophiles, established the Santa Ynez Valley alongside Napa and Sonoma as a premier California wine destination and inspired in a whole slew of 'Sideways'-themed winery tours.
[The Underground Wine Letter] The Underground Wine Letter | A Selection of Reasonably-priced ...: These bold, lush, fruit-forward Zinfandels from Sonoma County reveal the subtle character of their terroir and grape in a range of styles. The wines are produced and bottled by David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery in Geyserville. All the bottles have unique, eye-catching labels, depicting Paul Klee-inspired paintings, designed by Los Angeles artist, Sean Colgin. After spending years in the record business, Bruce Patch moved to wine country in 1997 and sold wine for others, including Deerfield Ranch until he turned his attention to producing his own wines.
[Wine World] Friday Tasting - April 2 - Wine World: The name Merlot is thought to derive from the Old French word for young blackbird, merlot, probably from the color of the grape or because of their fondness for eating them. Merlot is one of the primary grapes in Bordeaux wine where it is the most widely planted grapes.

[Red Wine Sipper] Merlot: Star Lane is the sister label to Dierberg who has become famous producing high quality Pinot Noirs from the Santa Maria and Santa Ynez Valleys. The fruit for the Star Lane Merlot comes from the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, which is typically much warmer, then the western side. This extra heat allows Merlot and Cabernet to achieve a ripeness that wouldnt occur in a cooler climate. While the 2006 is the latest release from Star Lane the one that I had most recently was the 2005. The 2005 showed a great balance of fruit and tannin that really hit the spot; flavors of cherry and chocolate were followed by a long satiny finish.

Its also one of the older AVAs in California, having been recognized by the Feds in 1983 (a flagship year for California AVAs, with 16 created, the most of any year, before or since, in that early-Eighties era of appellation-mania).
