[Grapescape's Blog] Mondovino: Not too much presented in the film was news to anyone that has an interest in wine.  Fundamentally, I must admit that I sympathize with what the film was trying to say.  I prefer “Old World” wine.  That is to say, I prefer unique wine that speaks to where it is from as opposed to wine that is heavily manipulated in the vineyard to please a generic palate.  I think wine is regional and specific and one should be able to taste that.  However, having worked in the wine production business, although most briefly, I have a cursory understanding of the business of wine and the push and pull between wine as a piece of art in a bottle and as wine commodity that must be sold to continue production.  There are many reasons why and how vineyards are planted many of which speak unrelated to what type of wine would, could and should be produced.  The wine industry in Virginia, for example, relies as much on the tourism aspect of the business as it does the quality of its wine.  There is often much work done on the juice in the winery to make an acceptable wine in the bottle and it would not be outrageous to question if it makes any sense to make wine in Virginia at all given expenses and quality.
