The texture allows the consumer to experience a rich array of flavors that highlight one of the best vintages for red wine this region has ever seen.

The comparison may not be fair when it comes to the grand scheme of things, but it's fair in terms of comparisons that consumers like me might make when it comes down to choosing a Riesling to purchase from the wine store shelf.

[Suburban Wino] Suburban Wino: The Day After Yesterday: What is creeping up the trellises is Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, noteworthy Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir in the Finger Lakes region, near Lake Erie, in the Hudson River Valley, and on Long Island. Winemaker Rich Olsen-Harbich only makes a varietal cabernet in the best years (the previous time was 2001) and when he does, its always one of my favorite examples of cool-climate cabernet -- full-flavored but at the same time elegant with a complexity of flavor only a long growing season and careful handling in the cellar can bring.

As everybody knows, sales for years have been flat or down (as they are for sparkling wines of all regions, including Champagne), and if you ask the average, or even the semi-knowledgeable, wine lover what they know about sparkling wine, he or she would probably run out of things to say, beyond “Its bubbly.” Thats compared to, say, Cabernet Sauvignon, which would likely elicit something about Napa Valley, or Pinot Noir, which might bring forth comments about cool climates and could even turn up references to specific regions, like Russian River Valley or Santa Rita Hills.
