Gourmets of Wine > New York Cork Report: Lenz Winery 2002 Old Vines Merlot

[New York Cork Report] A quick look around the Island shows that most wineries are pouring 2006 and 2007 reds now. One of the exceptions, however is Lenz Winery in Peconic, where they've just released their 2002 Estate Merlot and this Lenz Winery 2002 Old Vines Merlot ($55).

[Wine] Lenz Winery 2002 Old Vines Merlot: By Lenn Thompson, Editor-in-ChiefWhat a difference a few years can make.I know why most New York wineries release reds within two years of vintage. Many producers sell out quickly and need to have something on the shelves to sell.

[New York Cork Report] New York Cork Report: Tear Down This (Wine) Wall! Supporting NY ...: Although , my anecdotal experience has been that the overall region's product is not nearly as good from year to year, I would put certain wineries I have tried up there with LI and FL. I'm thinking of Brotherhood's Reislings and Millbrook's pinot noir for instance.

[The Pour] Long Island Merlot - The Pour Blog - NYTimes.com: Long Island Merlot at its best 2002 Medolla it is bottled out of Lenz Vineyard excellent structure and the berry and Oak nuances have evolved since its release into a wine of excellence. Long Island Cab Franc at its best try the 2005 if it can be found,or the 2006 Schneider Le Bouchet the green pepper is more like sweet rep pepper with nuances of cherry.

[New York Cork Report] New York Cork Report: Long Island Merlot Better Than Bordeaux?: Few are season wine writers and I would venture to guess that even fewer have ever ventured onto Long Island's North Fork or Sagaponack, so their opinions and awards are not based on any comprehensive tasting or study of Long Island Merlots, which range from the sublime to the flabby and forgettable. Plus, unfair as it may be, a majority of the wine writing hoi polloi don't take the varietal all that seriously in the first place and wouldn't be caught dead drinking "any f**king Merlot."

[The Pour] Island Pleasures - The Pour Blog - NYTimes.com: I’ve spent 30+ years in the wine business, including the last ten or so in retail, and I can verify that there are OCEANS of bad wine masquerading as merlot. When sales reps bring to you about 15 or more sample bottles of merlot every week, week in and week out, and all but two or three only vaguely exhibit the characteristics of good merlot, then you might agree with me.

[New York Cork Report] The New York Cork Report: Long Island Wines, Finger Lakes Wines ...: Sure, peruse a decent-sized wine shop and there are a few California rieslings and a few Washington versions available, but there are never very many. Since it doesn't take long to pick through this sparce selection, it also doesn't take long to figure out that many West Coast rieslings aren't that great (with some exceptions).

[Vine Views] Vine Views » Blog Archive » Long Island Wines @ City Winery in NYC: some ten years ago.  It was off-dry and I remember enjoying it quite a bit.  Today, it is still off-dry, but less sweet than in years past and the high acid is a perfect foil for the sugar, making for a remarkably well balanced wine.  We enjoyed several of the wines we tasted and aventually selected La Barrique Chardonnay to show at the event.  Pascal also tasted us through a few experiments that were really interesting and quite enjoyable.
