[24 Plus News - Politics & Financial] Grant Shapps - Is the internet the saviour or corruptor of ...: Only one slight gripe from me really: the vociferous interaction of our media panelists meant that the debate focused a bit too much on publishing, press and ”˜push’ models for my liking - more a discussion of the impact of the democratisation of the media than necessarily democracy itself at times.  On a couple of occasions, the contributions felt like ”˜my dad’s bigger than your dad’ rather than an attempt to identify and address problems or opportunities.  I guess that’s to be expected but, as a handful of Twitterers noted, it would’ve been nice to push harder at some of the more radical or fundamental issues around things like public participation in formal decision-making, privacy, open data, ongoing citizen engagement, leadership etc.

[B & J ULTRA ADVENTURE] Blog entry from St. Simon's Island, Georgia | B & J ULTRA ...: we headed back to Ultra and then back to the pool. Our boat neighbor that is anchored out off of our bow, Peter off of M/V Transition, invited us for dinner aboard. He made Pork Tenderloin, so Bill was in heaven. We took a salad, strawberries, and wine.Peter was traveling single-handed and has just returned from 3 months in the Bahamas, so he still had a stock of all of the wonderful provisions that he bought beforehand, since in the Bahamas they would be 3 or 4 times as much.He offered us ice cold beers which was a treat. Our refrigerator is still freezing canned beverages and exploding them, so cold beers are a hit or miss concept for us.Just remembered that we had put 4 beers in our refrig. so we are getting them out to enjoy.Peter had stocked up on beer before he left for the Bahamas, since beer is so expensive there. He said that a case of the local beer, i.e., Kalik, etc., is $75 and if you want Budweiser, etc.it is over $100 a case.YIKES!!That is $4.00 per beer from the grocery store.Beer drinking for the locals is NOT an option, but beer brought into the islands are worth a lot when you need something to get repaired in short time.Great trading item.We will definitely stock up before we are Bahamas Bound.Peter had dinner and a movie aboard. He had filmed his trip and we really enjoyed seeing where we were headed in a few months.Just beautiful and we were happy to hear the local info that he could provide us as well.Currently, it is $300 to enter the Bahamas and that is for 1 year stay.If you stay longer, then there is a tax issue. While we were eating dinner, a tremendous lightning storm began and then following were extremely high winds and rain. While checking out the weather, we noticed that the S/V Kahula catamaran was dragging its anchor. They had been off of our stern and were drifting quite rapidly out the Sound.Peter tried hailing them on the radio, but no answer. He then got out his 10 million candlepower spotlight and began spotlighting them.It appeared that they had anchored and just fallen asleep. Finally, after about 30 minutes of drifting their anchor caught, never did ever see them, but they were safe, just out in the middle of the channel, but there is no night traffic up here in this river, but finally the storm passed.

[Candler Students Around the World] Candler Students Around the World » Blog Archive » Gahmarjoba from ...: somewhat later, there was a woman, King Tamara, who was so instrumental in creating Georgian culture in the twelfth century that the church canonized her, and her portrait hangs in many of the churches and other important buildings.  She helped to develop a strong and proud Georgian identity, aspects of which can still be felt today.  They call her “King” because the way that they understand gender here is more related to activity in some ways than simply biology. She is certainly acknowledged as a woman, but is honored with the title of “King.” The women in Tbilisi with whom I have interacted are very proud of her contributions to Georgian society and culture.
