Gourmets of Wine > Oaked and/or unoaked Chardonnay: a symposium | STEVE HEIMOFF| WINE ...

[STEVE HEIMOFF| WINE BLOG] At $2,400 to $2,900, a 20% to 45% increase, we would have to raise our bottle prices to $24 to $29, inconsistent with market prices for unoaked Napa Carneros Chardonnay and not something my customers would accept. Additionally, I am unaware of many / any markets - other than oil and precious metals perhaps - that have the ability to raise their prices to customers by 20% to 45%, year over year.

[Orlando Wine Guide] The FLASQ – It's What's Inside That Counts - Orlando Wine Guide: It’s still early days for the company, but if they are going to have a large scale success, they need to not only explore California, but also brand out into South American and European wines. They need a Malbec (from Argentina), a Californian Red Blend, German Riesling, New Zealand Sauv Blanc, and a couple of Sparkling wines (Prosecco would be a good fit).

[A Good Time With Wine] New versus Old: Whites and reds of course will vary, with white wines perhaps showing more minerals, grapefruit or citrus than a New World wine with tropical flavors, including stone fruits or tree fruits.  Additionally, the nose, or bouquet of Old World wines will frequently mirror the palate, a bit more earthy for reds, a bit more mineral driven and austere for whites. In contrast, New World wines usually show a bit more fruit on the nose or palate, and can be more easy drinking and approachable.  Many Old World wines are food wines, and while they can be sipped on their own, food tends to bring out their qualities.  New world wines, on the other hand, are often good without food, though it’ll be find with food as well!

[WineLoversPage.com] 30 Second Wine Advisor: Oak or noak? - wineloverspage.com: Today's tasting offers a glimpse into the effect of oak on wine: I set up a "blind" tasting that pitted a white Burgundy from Saint-Aubin, produced by Michel Colin-Deléger, a maker with a reputation for a rather heavy hand with oak (at least by European standards), against a New Zelaand Chardonnay from Kim Crawford, a Marlborough producer who makes a virtue out of shunning oak entirely.

[winewisdom] Guide to winetasting – part 6: Apart from Picpoul de Pinet, Alsace is the only region which markets its grape varieties on the label.  Indeed, the choice of grape varieties has a lot to do with avoiding new oak influence.  Grape varieties where aroma and purity of fruit flavour are the raison d’etre perform best in inert containers which accentuate and enhance those aromatic and semi-aromatic qualities.  Riesling really has no affinity with oak.  Sauvignon blanc arguably too, though when blended with semillon in the classic whites of Bordeaux, it takes on whole different dimensions (and semillon has a great affinity for oak). Grapey muscat, rose-petal gewürztraminer, piquant pinot gris, these are the staples of Alsace, and inert containers.

[Vintage Texas Blog] A Day at the State Fair of Texas Wine Garden; Start the I-V Drip ...: I have counted about 25 Texas wineries that are now making wine from this grape. Like Viognier, the white grape originating from the south of France), the red Tempranillo grape also loves our hot Texas summertime weather, more so than conventional varieties of French grape like Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
