Gourmets of Wine > Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2004 : The Wine Front

[The Wine Front] I’m not sure that ripe, South Australian shiraz gets any better than this - in terms of depth and complexity. It’s a credit to Peter Gago and his team.

[wine-pages.com] wines of McLaren Vale, Australia: Andrew is sanguine about the challenges he faces in being part of this larger group, whose Australia-wide needs must add complexity, if not conflict to his job: "No, not really," he told me, "occasionally one of the Penfolds boys will come down here and spot a really nice patch of Shiraz and say 'that looks like Grange material', but if it's something I really had my eye on for Balmoral, then Balmoral is where it goes."

[Chris Shanahan] Chris Shanahan : Wine review -- Penfolds: Bin 128 shows cooler fruit origins in its elegant structure and underlying peppery/spicy shiraz flavours. But there’s a tannic austerity, too, and a pleasing savouriness that seems to come from both the fruit and the French oak.

[At First Glass] At First Glass: The noble grapes: syrah/shiraz: The relatively cooler weather of the Rhone valley produces less lushly ripe grapes, and therefore syrahs of more acidity and less, shall we say, fruit-bombiness than are to be had under the blazing suns of South Africa, Australia (thither did South African immigrants bring their "shiraz"), and California. Heavy pruning is especially necessary for syrah, so that the few grapes left on the vines get all those nutrients and all that flavor.

[JancisRobinson.com] Jefford's drought: Do venture to Victoria, when there is no bush fires, enjoy western Australia esp Pemberton, great Southern region and when you are in Sydney visit the Hunter Valley, who knows some of the wineries might bring out a 30 year old Semillon or Shiraz for you to try. Take a drive to Orange when you are in NSW.

[Oak Barrel] Oak Barrel » Blog Archive » Penfolds Bin Series release 2009: Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2008 - Nose was dominated by nutty aromas but as the glass warmed up, fruit with citrus nuance began to show through. The palate for me showed apple / lime characters.

[TheWineBlog.net (en)] TheWineBlog.net (en): Star drinking: Year in, year out, this wine remains one of my all-time favourite Australian reds - this vintage maintains the quality. Dense to opaque in appearance.

[Weddingbee] Crazy About Corkage: Bringing (Y)Our Own Wine » Weddingbee » The ...: This 2002 vintage is a stunningly rich, distinctive Shiraz that offers up scents of Provencal herbs, bay leaves, blackberries, black currants, new saddle leather, and loads of meaty characteristics. Rich, texturally opulent, and soft, this heady offering should drink well for 10-12 years.”

[Robert Francis Wine Blog] Full Media Round Up Saturday 4th April 2009 |: Sourced from the cooler wine regions of South Australia, primarily Adelaide Hills again, this is a very nicely balanced Chardonnay at a remarkably competitive price. A forward floral nose leads on to some refined, crisp lime and melon fruits, backed up with some subtle, classy notes of oak, and an elegant dry finish.

[Wine-O-Rama] Wine-O-Rama » Blog Archive » Penfolds Thomas Hyland 2005 Shiraz ...: Found at Krogers for $12.99, this inexpensive shiraz fills the void between the value Koonunga Hill and the wonderful Bin series.  KH tasted super cheap to us and the Bin 128 was divine.  The Thomas Hyland was very nice, for a very nice price.  Dark red fruit (with bright red fruit highlights) are the star here.  Dark plum, too with a unique sweet yet totally dry presence, with smooth tannins and a gloriously silky /velvety mouthfeel.  The medium finish of ripe, red fruit is quite nice.  Tastily tart, with little pepper (a good thing to us.) Scrumptious with tonight’s BBQ beef, I think this would ROCK with brownies.  For the price, WE LIKE.

[Vinoté Wine Cellar Notes] Vinoté Wine Cellar Notes | April 09 New Releases: This typical Rhone style wine is still a baby. Complex aromas of dried fruit and sweet herbs, the palate shows hints of chocolate and smoky oak, takes time to open up, has a tannin structure that suggest some cellar time will .

[Michelle's Blog] Michelle's Blog: My Wine List: Additionally, if the grapes are not quite ripe, or on the contrary, are too ripe, the ultimate end product will be affected. For example, a Sangiovese grape will taste different in the Napa Valley from the grape in Tuscany, Italy due to soil and other environmental conditions.

[The WGOM] Gold Glove Wines - Grant Burge Barossa Vines Shiraz 2004 | The WGOM: When I purchase 6, I tend to have 2 or 3 wines I know are great, and I roll the dice on 3 or 4 wines I have never tried and often have never heard of. This process is getting more difficult in a town the size of Alexandria, but luckily as wine popularity continues to pick up steam, my local liquor store has made it bearable by expanding and rotating their selection.
