[LENNDEVOURS] Taking the Heat -- Grapes With Grilling: Steak is considered by many the ultimate in grilled meat, and while youcould drink the aforementioned Cabernet Francs with it, MacariVineyards 2001 Bergen Road ($40) a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignonand Malbec, deep and rich with berry and chocolate flavors has morenoticeable tannins that stand up well to charred beef. While many LongIsland Cabernet Sauvignons tend to be light, everyday reds, the Lenz2000 Cabernet Sauvignon ($30) is an exquisite exception. Its ripe,full-bodied and overflowing with blackberry, raspberry and toasty oakflavors. It would be great with grilled lamb or venison.
[Carolyn Tillie's Ultimate California Wine Blog] Niebuam-Coppola - 76: This vintage is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Layered aromas of dark cassis, cocoa, and the classic "Rutherford dust," displays hints of wood and the barest tease of green bell pepper before showing some brighter cherry. The soft entry was well-balanced and elegant, repeating the cocoa tones with more expressive coffee notes which played well with a continuation of the cherry and cassis. At a full 30 months in French oak, the wine could easily be cellared for another twenty years.
[Carolyn Tillie's Ultimate California Wine Blog] Broman Cellars - 79: 1999 Broman Napa Valley Cabernet - 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc, with fruit sourced from Howell Mountain Vineyards from what was then Chateau Woltner, this wine predominates with dark cocoa and black cherry aromas. A hint of dustiness in the mid-palate subsides to produce roasted meat and barbecue qualities with its well-balanced tannins and supple finish. $54.00
[Purplesunshine.com] PurpleSunshine.com :: blog: At last night's impromptu wine and cheese party, we tried the 2001 Hedges Three Vineyards, a Cab-Merlot blend from Red Mountain in Washington state. I didn't spend much time sniffing at it, since I was drinking it out of a big plastic Dixie cup. But it had a smooth dark chocolate nose and a bit of pepper in it, too.
[Professorbainbridgeonwine.com] Professor Bainbridge on Wine: A very pleasant quaffer. Not especially complex, but well-balanced fruit (apple and citrus) and moderate oak, with good acidity and no discernible residual sugar make this a very easy to enjoy wine. It made an ideal match for a spicy shrimp boil, since it had no expensive complexity to be smothered by the Old Bay spice, but plenty of fruit and acid to refreshingly slice through the spice and fat. At $15, it's a very good value, which earns it bonus points.
[Carolyntillie_ultimate_california_wine_blog.typepad.com] Carolyn Tillie's Ultimate California Wine Blog: Artesa - 46: lements Proprietary Blend - 72% Merlot, 10% Syrah, and the rest a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and 2% Tempranillo. This wine as touted as an "exotic and spicy blend of Bordeaux and Rhone varietals." Interesting concept. There is definitely a WOW factor with the first sniff which produces candied red hots and subsides to produce lots of fruit.
[Carolyntillie_ultimate_california_wine_blog.typepad.com] Carolyn Tillie's Ultimate California Wine Blog: 2003 Pinot Noir, Piner Ranch Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 'Reserve - Holly's Block' - An almost odd, French-style Pinot, the slightly murky, brownish red color displayed a fruit bouquet that seemed already well-aged. The easy, smooth entry showed a balance of acids and tannins with some hints of burnt toast and Moroccan spices that faded to provide an easy complement to the pâté. Oliver's tease of a strawberry drizzle easily emphasized the strawberry notes in the wine and the earthiness of the pâté seemed to enliven a creamy nutmeg in the back-palate. $45.00
