[SLINGING JUICE] In a world gone mad”¦ (voiceover from the guy who did all the movie trailers for so many years) one winery dared to make a Shiraz that wasn’t boysenberry jam. One that had a deep color, great purity of purple and black fruit, and a viscosity Penzoil would envy.

[No Real Lair] No Real Lair - Deep in the Bush.: At the top we agreed that climbing a mountain in the blazing sunshine and high thirties temperature was maybe not the best of ideas, but the achievement and the view was just about worth it.  Stone me I was hungry though.  After lunch and a well deserved beer we headed homewards, via the Bests vineyard.  We'd enjoyed the wine the night before, and thought we'd see what else they had to offer.  This cellar door was a lot less friendly, far more corporate and had some pretty disappointing wines.  The $65 Shiraz was nice, but way past my budget.  I don't even have enough money to justify carving it up into a budget anymore.  The deal with these wine tastings is taste whatever you like, and buy whatever you want.  Definitely don't feel guilty about not buying anything, otherwise you'd be skint in three miles or so, especially in Barossa SA.  Whilst Heno was deciding on which wines she was after, I told the server about our trip to the Rockford vineyards with Stiffler and Kev.  Stiffler had been before, and met a Fifer (Jake?) working there.  He'd casually invited Paul to a private tasting the next time they were up, so the three of us were ushered through an unmarked door into the exclusive bar, where we spent two hours sampling each and every wine Rockford currently sell.  Being a bit of a newbie at all this, I appreciated the effort Jake was putting in for us but didn't really grasp how big a priviledge it was to be there - like if you've never heard music ever before and the first thing you do hear is Beethoven, or the first Bluetones album.  Anyway, I told our server at Bests all about this and he was green with envy.  "You've tried the 2002 Black Shiraz?  I work in the industry and I can't even get hold of it!" was choice quote from him.

[6speedonline.com Forums] Yet another excellent cheap wine thread - 6speedonline.com Forums: 2005 was a classic year for WA state reds, so I would say anything you might see out there from Januik, Betz, K Vintners, Andrew Will, Pepperbridge, Mark Ryan, among others, are great choices for the 2005 vintage vs. much more $ for California.

[Vegan Homemade] Farmer’s Market Green-Wa & My First Meme « Vegan Homemade: Lamb’s quarter is an ancient green that apparently grows wild almost everywhere.  The guy at the booth also called it wild spinach, and handed me a leaf to try.  Raw it was pretty bitter, but once cooked it tastes incredibly similar to spinach.

[Besotted Ramblings and Other Drivel] Besotted Ramblings: Peter Liem's Blog on Champagne, Wine and Other ...: many wines are becoming too rich and heavy in alcohol or in the case of regions like Alsace often too sweet also as residual sugar remains after winemakers stop the fermentations at alcohol levels that are "reasonable" ( read 13.5%) albeit some 1.5+ degrees an 10 or so gms /litre of sugar higher than the wines were 30 years ago. With the threat of global warning this aspect is going to present many challenges to winemakers to find viticulture approaches, yields, clones(?), yeasts that deliver grapes/wines of phenolic ripeness but less alcohol and/or residual sugar.

[Paarl Wine Country] Does Apartheid still lurk in wine making? | Paarl Wine Country: I know that I should not sink to these petty levels, but…(believe it or not), I have never needed to use a spell-check on a blog-site. Arno’s contributions surely serve to support my contention that the level of debate, as usually manifested on these sites, hardly warrants the need for high-falutin terminology??(2 question-marks for puzzlement, laced with a touch of sarcasm).

[Mastering life's courses for running, wine, and business school] From Pinyin to Shiraz to Pinot Noir « Mastering life’s courses for ...: Being the wine adventurer that I am, I will be scoping out the wine scene of these 3 incredible locations.  I was fortunate enough to tour Australia in June and visited the Barossa and Hunter Valley.  This time, however, I will be focused on the great Pinot Noirs and Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand’s wine regions.  But, I’m not going to hold off on my wine exploration until I head to Australia and New Zealand - I am going to try to make it to a wine bar in Shanghai to sample some pinyin (Chinese for wine) to see how Chinese “grape liquor” compares to my Californian standards.
