Gourmets of Wine > Sonoma and Napa: New Styles, New Wine - On Wine - WSJ

[WSJ.com: On Wine] I moved on to the wine list, less exhaustive but fairly impressive in its representation of the best Sonoma producers.  A precise but generous ”˜08 Ramey Russian River Chardonnay was available by the glass or bottle.  At $50, it was only about twenty percent above retail.  In keeping with the hotel’s eco theme, all of the wines on the list are either sustainably farmed (sust), organically farmed (org) or biodynamic (biod), though frankly I’m not sure how meaningful the first designation is. We had an excellent local, small production Pinot, the 07 Lioco Pinot Noir Henni’s vineyard, which was listed as “sust.”

[Simple Hedonisms] Illusive “wow factor” of wine found in a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir: Seamann says Clouds Rest wanted to give more people access to their Pinot Noir, but without compromising the label.  Femme Fatale is the answer; grapes come from the same vines and terroir Clouds Rest is known for, and the wine-making process is the same, except for bottle aging.  Femme Fatale is released earlier (younger), saving the winery on storage cost.

These vines join the worldwide nexus between Languedoc (Domaine de Nizas), Australia (Taltarni) and Napa where Goelet Wine Estates have holdings.

This AVA was officially designated in 1983, but many of the wines in the region used the designation as early as the 1970s (early in California’s wine history) with the many of the vines having been first planted in the early 1900s.

All seem to be successful in their DTC wine sales efforts, so why haven’t these very focused Sonoma County Wineries (or many others) utilized voluntary conjunctive labeling in the past, and how will doing so in 2014 help their marketability going forward?

While both reflect a house style of gripping acidity that eliminates any easy perception of soft roundness on the palate, I thought to myself that most jam fans would not like these well structured and balanced wines even though I, and probably your buddy David, would knock people over to get another glass.

Andrew Vingiello and Ed Kurtzman offered my wife and I the opportunity to assist as harvest interns last October.
