[Factoidz] Top 5 California Zins for Under $20 | Factoidz: 4. Cardinal Zin (2005). This tends to have excellent reviews and I find it’s among the more intense, complex zins - which may not be appealing to all. I find it has a more blackberry and plum nose and palate, though I also notice a rich, leathery finish. In all honesty, though, not everyone shares my nose and palate on this wine and I’ve personally seen that my clients do not always appreciate. At around $18-$20 a bottle, be sure that this is one you want to try before investing. A word of warning, though: This may seem silly to mention but this particular wine has a label which is considered “controversial” to many. I’ve had clients to simply found it off-putting and refused to try it for that reason. Your call.
[The Wine Spies] 2006 Scott Harvey Wines J & S Reserve Syrah « The Wine Spies: S Reserve Syrah shows exceptional balance and finesse between its new-world rich fruit and winemaking that brings out the old-world style of this much loved varietal. Soft and rich aromas and flavors, and while this wine is definitely fruit-forward its not so much so that the subtle earth, oak and spice are dominated.
[ProfessorBainbridge.com] Paul Draper on Aging Zinfandel - ProfessorBainbridge.com: Cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and syrah all fall into this category. IMHO, the California versions of all these wines reward cellaring as much as their French originals.
[The Grape Crusader] Wine Review - 2006 Carlisle Syrah, Sonoma, California « The Grape ...: Tasting Notes: In typical syrah fashion, this was an inky, dark, opaque pool of liquid nitrogen in a glass. On the nose, lots of smoke, wild berries and spice. In the mouth I tasted more wild dark berries, dark plums, smoke, new leather and a little bit of meat. This was a quintessential Carlisle wine. It was massively dense, chewy and big, but not heavy or cloying at all. The wine carried its 15.1% alcohol level really well, just like its sister syrahs and zinfandels in the Carlisle family. Tannins were definitely in the house, but they certainly weren’t so overpowering that the fat from a nicely marbled rib eye steak wouldn’t be able to tame them.
[Pearson's] KING OF ZINFANDEL . . . FROM LODI, CALIFORNIA: MICHAEL*DAVID ...: Wine Advocate Robert Parker 89 points: "The 2005 Syrah 6th Sense may deserve an outstanding rating. A sweet nose of black currants interwoven with smoke, lard, and damp earth is followed by a wine with a beautiful texture, velvety tannins, a lovely, opulent mouthfeel, and a long finish.
[Bigger Than Your Head] Bigger Than Your Head » A Rosé Is a Rosé Is a Rosé, Except When ...: The pragmatic New World attitude of blending red and white wines is not allowed in making rosés wines in France, however, except in the case of rosé Champagne. In Provence and elsewhere in the South of France, in the Loire Valley, where roses are increasingly important, and in other winemaking regions in the country, rosés must be made from all red grapes.
[California Wine Spot] California Wine Spot: SELECTION SALUTE: “I believe wines focused on fruitiness, like Syrah and Zinfandel, need very little new oak character. It can muck up the balance of the wine very easily.” Madroña has bottled Syrah since .
[Wine Blog] Wine Tasting: The Progression of One's Palate: It seems to surprise a lot of people that I still enjoy a glass of white zin even after years of working and educating about wine. As a vegetarian I eat a lot of spicy ethnic foods, especially with lots of peppers, jalepenos, New Mexican chiles, cayenne, and Hungarian paprika so the sweetness of white zin balances really well with the heat of the spices.

[GARAGE VINO] GARAGE VINO » Blog Archive » Garage 2007 Zin - Chapter 2: Crush ...: So, as covered in “Chapter 1,” due to a lack of thinking ahead, I was able to make the excellent, advanced, fine-winemaking decision of not destemming. Around six p.m., while the fading summer light still aided us on my “crush pad” (concrete patio behind my garage), I got all the buckets and “crush bins” and so on sterilized, created a sterilizing “foot bath” for my army of crushers (my kids) to step into before stomping on batches of grapes, and laid out a series of towels and patches of plastic and bins and buckets to form my little crushing production line.

[CheapWineRatings.com] You're Invited to a Cheap Wine Ratings Wine Tasting ...: This is a red blend from the Tautavel appellation in the Roussillon region of France, and it’s outstanding. It’s a combination of Grenache, Syrah and Carnigan… not a surprising blend at all from France. The bouquet on this wine favors the earth-side of the spectrum. Mushroom, toasted oak and walnut provide an earthy foundation to soft cassis and blackberry aromatics. The blackberry and cassis come to life in a big way on the palate, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it “fruit forward”. It is an elegant and full bodied wine, with silky tannins that give a luxurious feel to the wine. The berry flavors linger on the finish. This is a very nice wine.
