[Khim's Blog] CANDYGIRL: I hopped on the airport limousine, again just another honey glazed term for a giant bus to make you feel “fandandy”, short for fantastically dandy.  Anyways, I sat down as I started my one hour journey into Seoul.  As I stared out the window, soaking in the picturesque views of water landscape surrounding the highways, I started brainstorming everything I ever learned about the Korean culture.  This exercise was to get me assimilated very quickly and not feel so much like a fish out of water, or in my case a Malaysian American accidentally transiting in Korea.  The two cities that I have resided in Orange County, Garden Grove and Irvine had a large population of Koreans living in as well.  There are plenty of Korean markets and restaurants not to mention every single dry-cleaners and convenience market were owned by Koreans.  They somehow collectively flocked together in these cities and build a network of Korean businesses and patrons in an attempt to re-create a piece of homeland in America.  I have met quite a few Korean business owners that never bothered to learn a word of English because they can get through their day just dealing with their own people.  It is quite fascinating to see how strong their people stick together and how they value their traditions regardless of where they are geographically.  I also learned early on in my college days that they tend to marry only among their own race.
