[ damnum absque injuria] A Win-Wine-Whine (Or Not?) Filed under: Law Politics Wine by Xrlq @ 12:32 pm I just bet Paul Deignan a bottle of w(h)ine that last week’s “compromise” capitulation will backfire. If the Dems do not filibuster a single judicial candidate between now and January 20, 2009, or if the first filibuster is met with the same “nuclear” response the Republicans should have brought last week, Paul wins a bottle of Merlot, of a label of his choice, price not to exceed $20.00. Otherwise, I win a bottle of a type of my choice, subject to the same price constraints. Basically, I win either way. I’m open to suggestions. Depending on whether you expect me to win or lose the bet, I’d like to know (1) what good wines, if any, are available in Indiana, or (2) the best way to ship wine. UPDATE: Never mind, the bet’s off. First, by Paul’s own admission, there is no wine in Indiana, so it would be impossible for me to collect on the bet if I won. Second, shipping wine to Indiana is illegal...

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[mgoblog] Indiana Preview 2005: Hoep For The Futuer?: was introduced as Indiana's new head coach, he did something no man had ever done before. He said this: "There is really only one job that I would ever leave Miami for, and that is Indiana University," and proved... of success in the late 80s and early 90s in Bloomington but Indiana hasn't made a bowl game since 1993

[Publicola] GUNS 'N' RKBA ROUND-UP: Reason wades into gun control.  It's a little surprising to me how little Reason generally comments on gun issues, considering that it's a leading libertarian magazine.  But this month is different: Here's a debate on gun control among Don B. Kates, Michael Krauss, Wendy Kaminer and Abigail Kohn.  It's not really a debate as much as a series of suggestions by Kohn (anthropolgist and author of Shooters: Myths and Realities of America’s Gun Cultures) about how to "mov[e] the gun debate forward," to which Kates (a distinguished civil rights lawyer and gun rights advocate), Krauss (a strongly pro-gun lawprof at my alma mater), and Kaminer (an anti-gun journalist) respond.  Much worth reading.

[Powerlineblog.com] Power Line: March 2005 Archives: Quin Hillyer of the Mobile (Ala.) Register says that Alabamans want to know why Bill Pryor is being filibustered in the Senate. Hillyer notes that Pryor enjoys near universal support in the state, including the support of newspapers that endorsed Al Gore and John Kerry, the Democrat that Pryor defeated for attorney general, and Alabama's leading black politicians. He has earned this support in part by defending Democratic lawmakers against Republican lawsuits, defying the Republican governor who appointed him, and consistently enforcing liberal laws and court rulings that conflict with his personal predilections. Hillyer calls Pryor "a man of conscience even at his own political peril" and "a real-life Atticus Finch."

[Snunes.blogspot.com] Random Thoughts: Unfair and Unbalanced.: The feud between the parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, and their son-in-law continued even after her death: Brother Paul O'Donnell, an adviser to the Schindlers, said they and their two other children "were denied access at the moment of her death. They've been requesting, as you know, for the last hour to try to be in there and they were denied access by Michael Schiavo. They are in there now, praying at her bedside."

[Locussolus.com] locussolus: It's nice to see that this Pistons fan is being charged for throwing a coin at Allen Iverson, but it's hard to escape the conclusion that this behavior was encouraged by Stern's response to what happened last November in Auburn Hills. Wouldn't some serious consequences for the owners in Detroit have helped to prevent this latest incident? I'll admit to being a Pacers fan (I grew up in Indianapolis), but it's not the severity of Artest's punishment that's at issue here -- it's the fact that there was essentially no penalty for the Pistons organization.

[Johnfarinas.tripod.com] MY BLOG: Peter's Basilica where pontiffs throughout the ages have been laid to rest, the Vatican siad Monday. Chief spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls made the announcement after the College of Cardinals held two meetings over the course of 2 1/2 hours in its first gatherings since the pope's death and ahead of a secret vote later this month to elect a successor to John Paul.Navarro -Valls said John Paul would "almost surely" be buried in the tomb where Pope John XXIII lay before he was brought up onto the main floor of the Basilica.

[Xtra-rant.com] X-Tra Rant: Life In Digital: I’d prefer it to be an aggregator more than a group blog because a)two, soon to be three, websites is more than enough for me to be blogging on b) i don’t want to overwhelm members with writing commitments. I’d rather it be an aggregator so we can keep doing what we’re doing, but have a way to give a single access point to Hoosier liberal/progressive bloggers.
