[The Wine Guild of Charlottesville] 94 Point Classic California Cabernet | The Wine Guild of ...: Robert Parker has been trumpeting this winery’s virtues for the past 10-15 years, and yet it still remains somewhat under the radar, perhaps due to its out-of-the-tourist flow location a few miles down Conn Valley Road off of Silverado Trail. In his just-released year-end reviews of the best California wines, Parker had this to say about them: “It’s safe to say that Todd Anderson and winemaking assistant Mac Sawyer are flying on all cylinders with their Bordeaux varietals at this winery tucked away in Conn Valley.”

[Virginia Wine Quest] Virginia Wine Quest: Charlottesville: The 2008 Viognier had an appealing white peppery, smokey bite that our pourer attributed to aging in Eastern European oak. The Blenheim Farm Petit Verdot was the best Petit Verdot I have tasted thus far in Virginia.

[Grapescape's Blog] Pollack Vineyards « Grapescape's Blog: As for the reds, all were decent without any being exemplary.  I liked the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon best.  The Merlot was concentrated and offered good fruit and the clay that I find characteristic of good Merlot.  The Cab was different.  Certainly not California fruity or Bordeaux deep and brooding, it featured some fruit and hinted at some of the other Cab favorite flavors like leather and dirt but wasn’t quite there and wasn’t quite the same.  I enjoyed this wine not for its greatest but because it was on the menu.  Cabernet Sauvignon is not that well suited to Virginia.  Vineyards are experimenting with different clones that will produce better fruit here but I don’t believe they have hit the right one.  For my money, it’s the wine grape that Americans associate with “red wine” so it’s always interesting to me to see how it turns out in different places.
