Gourmets of Wine > Winecast 42 - “New” New World Pinot Noir
[Winecast] This month’s theme is provided by Jens from the Cincinnati Wine Garage blog who has challenged us to sample Pinot Noir from outside of Burgundy, California or Oregon. So I first thought of a Spanish Pinot Noir I recently had at a tasting that really was different from my paradigm of Pinot from it’s more famous appellations.

LENNDEVOURS: Winemaker Peter Bell, began his winemaking career in Australia, where he earned a degree in enology at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, where he also worked in the school's winery. Upon graduation he became assistant winemaker for Hunter's Wines in New Zealand, producing chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blanc -- while experimenting with pinot noir as well. (via Cosmos)
Vinography: a wine blog: If you you take all the Pinot Noir winegrowing regions of the world and you subtract out all that are in Europe, and likewise all that are on the west coast of the United States, what are you left with? Quite a few places, really, but all of them might be lumped together in a flight of fancy under the name "New New World." Call them up-and-coming, call them fringe, call them frontiers of winemaking -- it was from these regions that bloggers around the Internet were instructed to select a wine for Wine Blogging Wednesday 14, hosted by Jens at the Cincinnati Wine Garage. [Wine Expression] WBW #14 - NEW New World Pinot Noir: . A coy nose of minerals and earth with a beautiful cherry color. The wine tasted rich in fruit but had nice acidity without overpowering tannins. The long complex finish is where I was mostly impressed, as the mouthfeel was smooth and silky, with a touch of oak that was very well balanced. This was an excellent wine with enough backbone for a rich meal. Thanks Jens over at Cincinnati Wine Garage for hosting the event, and giving me the recommendation to try some Pinot Noir from a region other than California, Oregon, or Burgandy. This won't be the last bottle of Pinot Noir from New Zealand that I enjoy.
Cheap Wine Reviews: This time, while attempting this feat, the pressure caused wine to squirt out of the hole that my corkscrew made. Not only did I ruin a perfectly good wife-beater t-shirt, but I actually got wine on my ceiling. (via Cosmos)
LENNDEVOURS: I'd also like to remind all you creative types out there that I'm running a WBW logo design contest. So far we only have one logo submitted...and the deadline is November 1st. (via Cosmos)
[cincinnati wine garage -- tasting notes and other stuff] Wine Blog Wednesday #14 ReCap: For the Pinot Noir wines I was a bit surprised that I couldn't find any tasting note of German wines (called Spätburgunder). For those who are interested I would recommend to try German Spätburgunder from the Ahr region (most famous producer is Jean Stodden).
